Summer security warning for conservatory owners

Homeowners with kitchen extensions and conservatories have today (July 28th) been warned to beef up their security.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has revealed that there were 78,000 domestic burglary claims last summer, which equates to 1,250 claims every working day.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, explained that taking simple precautions is crucial at this time of year because thieves are particularly active.

"Everyone wants to relax in the sun, apart from burglars who are on the lookout for easy pickings," he said.

"Insurance can of course provide financial compensation, but it cannot compensate for the trauma of a burglary."

The ABI also issued a number of security tips for homeowners, including advising them to use light timers when they go on holiday to create the impression that their property is occupied.

Earlier this month, research by M&S Money revealed that 49 per cent of Britons fail to lock their sheds and other garden buildings at times.
